AIGA S.B. has a fantastic event calendar coming up in Fall 2013. We’ll have more details as the event dates get closer, so stay tuned, but we thought you’d like to see what’s on the horizon for our chapter:
10/23 – Sign Painters: The Movie
Our 2013 film series continues with “Sign Painters: The Movie,” followed by a Q&A with sign painter Nick Barber of Ventura, who is featured in the film. As recently as the 1980s, storefronts, murals, banners, barn signs, billboards and even street signs were all hand-lettered with brush and paint—but like many skilled trades, the sign industry has been overrun by the techno-fueled promise of quicker and cheaper. Computer-designed, die-cut vinyl lettering and inkjet printers have ushered a creeping sameness into our landscape, but there is a growing trend to seek out traditional sign painters and a renaissance in the trade. Filmmakers Faythe Levine and Sam Macon traveled the country documenting these dedicated practitioners, their time-honored methods, and their appreciation for quality and craftsmanship. Their documentary is the first anecdotal history of this craft, featuring the stories of more than two dozen sign painters from throughout the United States.

11/13 – Design Business Matters, Part 2
Back by popular demand, it’s Part 2 of an engaging panel discussion. Moderator Wayne Kosaka will return to reprise an engaging May 2012 conversation with a new panel of professional creatives. How do you navigate being both a creative and a business person? Making your living in today’s world is challenging, but add the desire to create and you really have your hands full. It’s not enough to produce beautiful work—you need to know how to market, price, and budget it too, because strong business skills are a must for survival in this competitive market. Join AIGA Santa Barbara and a panel of accomplished creatives sharing their personal stories and roads to success. The lineup (to be announced) will be offering their observations on the state of the industry, the ups and downs of design and business, and why that matters!
