In the spirit of giving, on Sunday evening, December 5th , a small hardy band of AIGA directors aided Hospice of Santa Barbara by setting up 250 chairs for their annual Light Up a Life Event in front of the Lobero Theater.
Since 1972, Hospice of Santa Barbara has provided compassionate care to the dying and bereaved in the Santa Barbara community. This caring organization has touched the hearts of many in times of great difficulty and in doing so, inspired the AIGA Santa Barbara board to assist in their annual holiday event.
Despite the rain, hundreds of people ventured out into a wet December evening to attend. With weather not cooperating and the 250 chairs soaked, a wise decision was made to move inside the Lobero. There, choral singers and touching speeches reflecting on lives of lost loved ones rang thru the theater. It was a ceremony touching all who attended and demonstrating the importance of Hospice in our communities and homes.
At the end of the event, families huddled under umbrellas, were asked to hang a star on a tree in memory of a loved one. The tree was lit with a round of applause, big hugs and bittersweet tears.
